I adore neutral décor—how about you?
When you decorate with layers of warm neutral tones, it instantly softens your space and makes it so easy to add simple seasonal accents throughout the year. Then, when the season changes, you can simply remove those layers and your base still feels beautiful and complete.
Starting with a neutral foundation of dried botanicals and natural textures gives you so much flexibility as the seasons pass.
Start with a Natural “Base Layer”
Begin with neutral berries, cedar cones, or similar natural fillers. They create a cozy foundation and help support the layers you’ll build on top.
And don’t forget the easiest staple of all—pinecones.
I truly can never have enough of them.
I love using pinecones in every season, not just fall and winter. A simple bowl of pinecones is beautiful all on its own. You can also fill apothecary jars with them for a natural, effortless look on open shelving or bookcases.
Add Wood Elements for Texture
Once you’ve “made the bed,” start layering in wood elements to build warmth and depth.
Grapevine balls and twig spheres are an easy place to start. I recommend using a mix of sizes and tones—dark brown, beige, and even white for contrast.
It’s also fun to gather twigs from your yard, bundle them with twine, and tuck them into your arrangement. That adds a beautiful, natural texture that feels very organic.
Birch bark is another favorite of mine. If you don’t have access to it, I have birch bark tags that I wood-burn with woodland artwork, which are a beautiful way to bring that same rustic feel into your décor

Add Soft Botanical Layers
You could absolutely stop with just those natural textures—but there’s one more layer that’s really fun to add: wood flower blossoms.
Fair warning… these can become a little addictive. But they’re so beautiful to collect and reuse throughout the years.
For a neutral-inspired arrangement, I love using deeper tan, soft beige, or warm taupe flowers. They add subtle depth and softness without overpowering the natural tones underneath.
It only takes a few to make an impact, but you can also layer more in for a fuller, more whimsical look.
Styling a Dough Bowl in Your Home
Styling with a wooden dough bowl is one of the easiest ways to add charm and warmth to your home.
I often create larger arrangements for a coffee table centerpiece, but smaller versions work beautifully in so many spaces.
Try one on:
- your coffee bar (coffee beans make a great natural filler here)
- open shelving (paired with vintage books is so pretty)
- entry tables for a welcoming touch
- even the back of a toilet—yes, really! It’s a surprisingly cute little styling spot
Final Thoughts
Decorating with dried botanicals and wood flowers is incredibly rewarding. The only challenge is trying to choose your favorites!
The great news is you don’t have to rush. You can grow your collection slowly, and everything stores easily for reuse throughout the year.
No two arrangements ever turn out exactly the same—which is what makes them so special. Every time you style your dough bowl, it becomes a brand-new piece for your home.
So much fun.
