They're not your ordinary Halloween decorations...
Every Halloween gathering needs a few characters with personality.
At Boutique Barn, those characters begin as natural gourds and gradually become something entirely different. Each witch is handcrafted by me, one at a time, with her own shape, hairstyle, stance, accessories, and personality.
No two are exactly alike. And once they're finished, they seem to have a way of becoming characters all their own.
From Gourds to Witches
These witches begin with something much different than the finished character you see.
Each one is handcrafted using a long gourd for her body and a small round gourd for her head. Even their arms are individually chosen from collected gourd stems, matched and positioned to create a graceful gesture that becomes part of each witch's personality.
Each witch also carries her own name, carefully engraved by hand on the lower left side of her body—a small detail that makes her feel even more like an individual character rather than simply a piece of Halloween décor.
And no witch would be complete without her broom. Each witch comes with her own broom, handcrafted by me from a real tree branch and natural rope and jute. I shape and finish each one individually so it feels like a natural extension of her character rather than a mass-produced accessory.
Then comes the hair.
I create each witch's hair myself by making individual wefts from an incredibly soft yarn fiber, carefully fashioning them onto her head, and then styling the hair specifically for her character. Long braids, loose waves, ponytails, and wild, flowing styles all help give each witch her own distinct personality.
Their tall, pointed black hats are decorated with a mix of neutral-toned rope, dried pods, twigs, berries, and other natural elements. Each witch also has her own broom to complete her unmistakable Halloween look.
Because I create each witch individually and work with the natural shapes and character of the gourds themselves, no two are ever exactly alike. Every witch is a one-of-a-kind Halloween character, handmade by me from beginning to end.
Five Witches. Five Personalities.
Perhaps the most fun part is discovering who each witch seems to be.
Although they share the same unmistakable black pointed hats, each has developed her own look and personality through her stance, hairstyle, and little details.
Tabby
Tabby is the tall, willowy one, standing straight and looking as though she has somewhere important to be. Her loose black ponytail is tied simply with twine, and her black beaded necklace adds just the right touch of witchy elegance.
She seems calm and collected—but perhaps she's the one quietly keeping everyone else in line.
Tessa
With an extraordinarily long braid trailing down her back, Tessa has a quiet, graceful presence. Her curved arms and brown beaded necklace give her a softer look, but don't let that fool you.
She may simply be the witch who prefers to watch the mischief unfold rather than get caught in it.
Tianna
Tianna doesn't seem particularly concerned with standing perfectly straight. With her body bending slightly backward and her full, wavy hair spilling freely around her, she has an unmistakably carefree spirit.
Her dark brown beaded choker adds just a little mystery to this free-spirited witch.
Tulip
Tulip leans back with a wild head of hair and her arms curled inward, as though she's just heard something particularly amusing. Her triple-layer beaded necklace makes quite a statement.
She's definitely not the quiet one in the group—and she may be responsible for some of the trouble.
Tabitha
Tabitha is the dancer of the bunch.
Bent dramatically backward, one arm raised and the other curved inward, she looks as though she's caught in the middle of a spell—or perhaps simply enjoying herself in a dance. Her two long braids, tied with twine, and alternating neutral-toned beads give her a wonderfully earthy, carefree character.
No Two Witches Are Alike
One of my favorite things about creating these characters is that their individuality isn't limited to what you see from the front.
Their hairstyles, the shapes of their bodies, the placement of their arms, their necklaces, hats, and natural embellishments all come together to create something completely their own.
Even the backs of the witches are intentionally finished and full of character.
When I line them up together, it's easy to see just how different they are. Five gourds become five completely different personalities.
That's the magic of working with natural materials. The gourd itself brings its own shape and character to the process, and I let that help guide the witch that emerges. From their hairstyle and hand-selected arm position to her necklace, engraved name, hat, and handmade broom, every detail is chosen specifically for her. Each witch becomes her own one-of-a-kind character.
A Little Halloween Magic
Of course, witches are meant to gather.
Put them around a glowing gourd cauldron, add a rustic table, a few autumn berries, and perhaps a little spooky atmosphere, and suddenly they become more than individual decorations. They become a Halloween gathering. Like the witches themselves, the cauldron is handcrafted from a natural gourd and finished by me.
Whether displayed together as a group or given a special place of their own, these witches are made to be noticed.
They can bring a little whimsy to a rustic dining table, add personality to a Halloween display, or become an unexpected conversation piece when guests arrive.
