I've always been drawn to their soft, graceful curves and the incredible fact that they begin as a real vegetable, grown by nature and dried to perfection. Long after the growing season has passed, these remarkable gourds become a lasting canvas for art. Mother Nature provides the shape—I simply have the privilege of revealing the design hidden within.
From American Farms to My Workshop
I proudly source my gourds from dedicated gourd farmers across the United States, supporting the growers whose hard work makes my creations possible. Each time a shipment arrives, it's a little like opening a gift. I never know exactly what shapes and sizes I'll find inside.
Rather than sketching a design ahead of time, I wait until I can hold each gourd in my hands. I study its curves, feel its texture, and let its natural form inspire the artwork. Every gourd has its own personality, and I believe the design should complement the shape that nature has already created.
A Design Inspired by Nature
When I picked up this particular gourd, its gentle slope immediately reminded me of a butterfly floating effortlessly on a summer breeze. That feeling inspired the delicate butterfly artwork and the graceful leafy openings that allow warm candlelight to dance through the shell.
Using traditional pyrography, I carefully burn the butterfly design into the surface before individually carving each opening by hand. The finished luminary celebrates both the elegance of nature and the beauty of handcrafted artistry.
